We carried out our first science inquiry today. By holding a flashlight near a craft stick from different angles and heights we made shadows of different lengths. When the flashlight was to the side it made a longer shadow, but when it was higher over the stick, it made a shorter shadow.
Today we were no longer first graders. We were surgeons:
Word Surgeons. What? Didn't you learn about contractions while donning surgical masks and rubber gloves? No? What a shame... We began learning about non-standard units of measure this week. We read, "How Big is a Foot? by Rolf Myller. It's about a King who decides to have a bed made for the Queen. He uses his feet to measure the Queen, and gives the measurements to the Royal carpenter. The apprentice carpenter is given the measurements and told to make the bed, but his feet were a bit smaller than the King's...
The students partnered up to see how many of 'their' feet long or tall, different objects in our classroom were. Condensation, Precipitation, and Evaporation, Oh my! First graders love learning science. Especially when they are the scientists. We started with a 'shaving cream' cloud sitting on top of water. Slowly, we added water mixed with blue food coloring to 'fill up the clouds' Once the cloud filled up with water it began to rain down.
